Cleaning & Caring for your Flokati Rug

Flokati rugs have been a popular choice for home decor for centuries, with their soft and cozy texture and unique appearance.

Caring for your Flokati rug is essential to maintain its quality and prolong its lifespan.

In this blog post, we'll share some tips on how to care for your Flokati rug so that it looks and feels as good as new for years to come.

Shake and Beat

Flokati rugs have a long pile, which makes them prone to collecting dirt and debris.

A good shake or beating can help remove any dirt, dust, or debris that may have accumulated inthe rug.

Hang your rug on a clothesline or railing and shake it gently to loosen any dirt or debris.

You can also ‘beat’ your rug using common items around the home (ie. Tennis racquet/Cricket Bat), starting at one end and working your way across the rug.

Spot Cleaning

In case of spills or stains, it is important to address them immediately.

Blot the area with a clean cloth or paper towel to remove as much of the spill as possible.

Avoid rubbing the stain, as it can spread the spill and cause it to set deeper into the fibers.

Use a mild, non-toxic carpet cleaner or a mixture of water and white vinegar to clean the stain.

Do not use harsh chemicals, bleach or ammonia on the rug, as they can damage the rug's fibers and colors.

If you have a stubborn stain, you can simply pull/cut the wool from the rug.

Washing

We recommend hand washing your rug once every 12 months.

A standard ‘Wool Wash’ product from your local supermarket is sufficient.

Small Rugs: Hand wash in a basin or bath.

Large Rugs: The weight of the rug increases significantly when wet, hence a bath is not recommended. Simply place over a structure like a fence/balustrade and use a hose to wet, wash, rinse, then air dry (preferably in the sun to speed up drying).

Storing Your Flokati Rug

If you need to store your Flokati rug, make sure it is clean and dry before storing it.

Roll the rug loosely and wrap it in a breathable material such as muslin or cotton.

Store your rug in a cool, dry area with good air circulation.

Conclusion

Flokati rugs are beautiful and comfortable additions to any home.

Regular maintenance and care will ensure that your rug lasts for many years to come.

With these tips, you can keep your Flokati rug looking and feeling its best, while also protecting your investment.
